A district under the jurisdiction of Kunming City in the northeastern part of Yunnan Province, China. It is located in the Xiaojiang basin, a tributary of the Jinsha River. The permanent population is 271,917 (2010). For the past 2,000 years, it has been known as a source of high-quality copper called "Yunto". In 1954, the Dongchuan mining area was separated from Huize County to develop China's largest copper mine, centered on Tangdanshan in the northwest. It was incorporated as a city in 1958, and became a district of Kunming City in 1998. The copper content of the ore from this mine is said to be 25-50%. A branch line runs through it from Sitangzi on the Guiyang-Kunming Line (Guiyang-Kunming).
