Carpaccio - Vittore Carpaccio

Carpaccio - Vittore Carpaccio

A Venetian painter of the Italian Renaissance. Born in Venice, he is believed to have died there. He is thought to have been a pupil of Gentile Bellini, and like his teacher, he painted many religious genre-style paintings with his unique imagination on large canvases (called terreros), which are unique to Venice. His first work with a date is the nine-panel "Life of Saint Ursula" (Venice Academy Gallery), including "Arrival at Cologne" (1490). This series, painted for the Scuola di Sant'Orsola (Society of Saint Ursula), vividly depicts the streets and scenery of Venice in detail. Other similar series for Venetian schools include the Story of St. George for the Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni (1502-07), the Life of the Virgin Mary for the Scuola degli Albanesi (1504-08), and the Life of St. Stephen for the Scuola di Santo Stefano (1511-20). Many of the works are signed and dated, making it easy to trace the evolution of Carpaccio's style, but he did not adopt the new styles of Titian or others, even in the 16th century.
