Heronius (English spelling) swamp pink

Japanese: ヘロニアス（英語表記）swamp pink

A perennial plant of the lily family native to eastern North America, closely related to the Japanese genus Helonius (illustration). There is one species in one genus. It looks very similar to Helonius, but the flower stalk has no bracts. The flowers are reddish purple like Helonius, but the stigma is three-lobed. It flowers from April to May. There are many known examples of closely related plants being distributed separately in eastern North America and East Asia, and the genera Helonius and Helonius are one example. These are thought to suggest that the flora of North America and East Asia interacted with each other during the Tertiary Period, when the Earth was warmer.

日本にあるショウジョウバカマ属に近縁な北アメリカ東部産のユリ科の多年草（イラスト）。1属1種。外見はショウジョウバカマにそっくりだが，花茎に苞葉がない点がちがう。花はショウジョウバカマに似て紅紫色だが，柱頭は3裂している。花期は4～5月。北アメリカ東部と東アジアに近縁な植物が隔離分布する例は多数知られており，ヘロニアス属とショウジョウバカマ属もその一例である。これらは地球がより温暖であった第三紀に，北アメリカと東アジアの植物相が交流しあったことを示唆するものと考えられている。
