Aligarh Movement - Aligarh Movement

Japanese:
Aligarh Movement - Aligarh Movement

A modern reform movement that began among Indian Muslims in the late 19th century. The failure of the 1857 Indian Mutiny (Sepoy Mutiny) had a serious impact on Indian Muslims, forcing them to change direction. It was Sayyid Ahmad Khan (1817-1898) who came up with a pro-British stance and modern reforms. He preached the need for modern higher education for Muslims and founded a private college (now the Aligarh Muslim University) in Aligarh (now the western part of Uttar Pradesh). He preached enlightenment ideas in Urdu and promoted the development of modern Urdu literature. These modern reforms led to the acceptance of liberalism among Muslims. His collaborators included Khali and Chirag Ali.
