An ethnic group living in the semi-arid Fouta Toro region in northern Senegal, West Africa. They are heavily influenced by the pastoral Fulbe people and speak the Fulani language. The name comes from the Tekhlour Kingdom, which flourished in this area from the 10th to 18th centuries. They adopted Islam in the 11th century. Their social organization is based on patrilineal lineage, and polygamy is practiced. Their society is becoming increasingly stratified, with a differentiation into a class of free people including aristocrats, artisans, and slaves. Their main occupation is agriculture, but in recent years the number of migrant workers moving to cities has increased due to factors such as the contradictions of a stratified society, population growth, and stagnant economic activity. The current population is estimated to be around 500,000. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
