…　ワシントン条約(1922)で戦艦の保有量が制限されたため，補助艦でこれを補うべく日本の古鷹級をはじめとする重装備の重巡洋艦(重巡)が出現した。さらにロンドン海軍条約(1930)で補助艦の保有量および巡洋艦の排水量，主砲の口径が制限されたため，海軍条約の制限内で性能を極限まで追求したいわゆる条約型巡洋艦treaty cruiserが生まれた。各国が競って建造した重巡(ロンドン軍縮条約で排水量1万トン以下で15.5～20.3cmの砲を有するものと定義された)は防御においてそれぞれ特徴を持つほかはいずれも20.3cm連装砲塔4～5基を前後に配し，連装魚雷発射管2～4基を有する似通った艦となった。…
