A general term for insects belonging to the order Coryphia, suborder Microcoryphia. It is named after its habit of jumping on rocks. It is one of the primitive insects, and retains basal plates, which are part of the legs, on the abdominal segments. Body length is 5 to 20 mm. It is similar in shape to the Japanese book pest Coryphia, but its body is not flat. Its body color is gray-brown with black and white markings, but these colors come from the scales that grow on the surface of its body. The structure of its mouth, antennae, etc. is similar to that of winged insects, but its abdomen has abdominal spines and gastric vesicles found in myriapods. It lives on rocks in mountains and coasts, on shady tree trunks, under fallen leaves, etc., and feeds mainly on terrestrial algae. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
