A breed of domestic dog native to Japan. A medium-sized breed used for hunting in Kochi Prefecture, it was once called the Tosa dog, but was renamed the Shikoku dog because it was easily confused with the Tosa fighting dog. It is a fierce-tempered dog that became the basis for the Tosa fighting dog. Its physique is similar to other medium-sized Japanese dogs, standing 43-55 cm tall and weighing 15-20 kg. Most of its coat colors are black sesame, red sesame, or sesame. Its body is well-muscled and sturdy, but its movements are light and it gives the impression of being very agile. Among them, sesame-haired ones, with white lips like a wolf, give a wild impression. Many people love it as a family dog. It was designated a natural monument in 1937 (Showa 12).
