A commercial city in the western part of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. It is the administrative capital of the Aligarh district. It is located about 129 km southeast of Delhi. The city is made up of a commercial district called Koil in the west and an area centered on the ruins of Aligarh Fort in the east. Koil has ancient origins, but the fort was built in the early 16th century and many of the Islamic temples were built in the early 18th century. Agricultural produce and butter from the surrounding area are traded, and metalwork and carpet manufacturing are carried out. Aligarh University was founded in 1875, and it is the site of the Aligarh Movement, which aimed to rationalize Islamic thought. Population: 479,978 (1991).
