Aligarh (English spelling)

A commercial city in the western part of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. It is the administrative capital of the Aligarh district. It is located about 129 km southeast of Delhi. The city is made up of a commercial district called Koil in the west and an area centered on the ruins of Aligarh Fort in the east. Koil has ancient origins, but the fort was built in the early 16th century and many of the Islamic temples were built in the early 18th century. Agricultural produce and butter from the surrounding area are traded, and metalwork and carpet manufacturing are carried out. Aligarh University was founded in 1875, and it is the site of the Aligarh Movement, which aimed to rationalize Islamic thought. Population: 479,978 (1991).

インド北部，ウッタルプラデーシュ州西部の商業都市。アリーガル県の行政庁所在地。デリーの南東約 129kmに位置。市街は西側のコイルと呼ばれる商業地区と，東側のアリーガル城址を中心とする地域から成る。コイルの発祥は古いが，城は 16世紀初期に造られ，多くのイスラム寺院は，18世紀初期の建設である。周辺の農産物やバターが取引され，金属細工，カーペット製造が行われる。 1875年創立のアリーガル大学があり，イスラム思想合理化をめざすアリーガル運動が最初に展開された。人口 47万 9978 (1991) 。
