Higashi Shirakawa [Village] - Higashi Shirakawa

Japanese: 東白川[村] - ひがししらかわ

A village in Kamo County, eastern Gifu Prefecture. Population 3,196 (1995). Located in the upper reaches of Shirakawa River, a tributary of Hida River, arable land accounts for only 4% of the village area, with most of the village being in mountainous areas at around 1,000m above sea level. Settlements and cultivated land are scattered along the main tributary of Shirakawa River, with Kandō in the center being a town and village along the prefectural road (Shirakawa Kaido). The village is known as a speciality producer of Shirakawa tea and Tono Hinoki cypress. The anti-Buddhist movement carried out by the Naegi Domain at the time of the Meiji Restoration was thorough, and the village is still known as having no temples. The natural habitat of Japanese maples in Otsupara is a natural monument.

岐阜県東部，加茂郡の村。人口3196(1995)。飛驒川の支流白川上流域に位置し，耕地は村域の4％にすぎず，大部分は標高1000m前後の山地帯である。集落と耕地は白川の本支流に沿って点在し，中心の神土（かんど）は県道(白川街道)沿いの街村集落である。白川茶と東濃ヒノキの特産地として知られる。幕末維新期に当時の苗木藩が断行した廃仏毀釈は徹底したもので，今なお寺のない村として知られる。越原（おつぱら）のハナノキ自生地は天然記念物。
