The genus Connarius, which belongs to the family Connariceae, is a woody plant with approximately 100 species (illustration). It is widely distributed in tropical regions around the world. It is a well-branched shrub or tree that often grows as a vine, and is often found in secondary forests and roadsides. The leaves are alternate, and the base of the petiole has a developed pulvinus like that of the Fabaceae, but it has no stipules. Small flowers are clustered in panicles at the ends of the branches, and produce fruits with a single bean-like seed. The fruits, seeds, and bark of the Connarius genus are used locally as folk medicines in various tropical regions. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
