A Roman soldier, politician, and scholar during the Roman Empire. While serving as governor of overseas territories, he collected documents and wrote the 37 volumes of Natural History, a kind of encyclopedia covering 20,000 items including animals, plants, minerals, geography, astronomy, medicine, and art. He died while inspecting the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was called Pliny the Elder.
