…In 1965, a coalition government of Joseph MLT Cals (1914-71) of the Catholic People's Party, the Labour Party, and the Anti-Revolutionary Party was formed, and carried out extensive educational reforms. However, for several years after this, the wealthy welfare state was shaken by student and youth rebellions and the rise of the New Left. Direct actions continued, such as the Provo (an anti-establishment anarchist group) movement against the marriage of Beatrix (now the Queen) in the spring of 1966, student movements against the strengthening of university control in 1968, and street demonstrations by workers. Radicalism also spread to political parties, and the young left-wingers of the Labour Party called themselves the New Left, and seized hegemony within the party by calling themselves the New Left and calling for the abolition of the monarchy and against NATO. In 1966, the Democratic 66 (Democrats of 1966) was formed, calling for constitutional reform, the abolition of the Senate, and direct election of the Prime Minister. …
