Dog run - Inubashiri

An architectural term. Originally meaning a space large enough for a dog to pass through, the term has come to refer to a walkway-like pavement several tens of centimeters wide that runs around the perimeter of a building. It is built to prevent the building's floor from getting dirty from splashes of mud. Taking into consideration the harmony with the building, paving methods such as tatami mats, mortar coating, stone paving, brick paving, tile paving, and gravel paving are selected. The area between the toe of a levee or revetment wall (the intersection of the slope and the horizontal plane) and the gutter is also called a dog run. It is built to prevent soil from the slope (sloping surface) from flowing down into the gutter during rainfall.

建築用語。犬の通いうるほどの空間の意であるが、転じて、建物の周囲に数十センチメートル程度の幅で巡らす通路状の舗床のことをいう。建物の足元が泥の跳ね返りなどで汚れるのを防ぐために設けられる。建物との調和を考慮して、たたき、モルタル塗り、石敷き、れんが敷き、瓦(かわら)敷き、砂利敷きなどが選ばれる。また、堤防、護岸壁などの法尻(のりじり)（法面(のりめん)と水平面との交線）と側溝との間に挟まれた部分のことも犬走りという。降雨の際、法面（傾斜面）の土が流れ落ちて側溝に流入するのを防ぐために設けられる。
