Euscaphis japonica

Japanese: ゴンズイ（英語表記）Euscaphis japonica

It is a deciduous subtall tree of the Trifolium family, distributed throughout eastern Asia. It grows wild in mountain forests in various areas west of the Kanto region. The branches are somewhat thick and purple-black, and the leaves are odd-pinnate compound leaves with 3 to 5 pairs of leaflets, grow to about 30 cm in length, and grow in opposite pairs. The leaflets are long and ovate with pointed tips and inward-curving serrations on the edges. In early summer, a large panicle grows at the top, and produces numerous yellow-green, five-petaled florets. The fruit is a beautiful capsule that splits open to reveal the red interior of the thick shell. Shiny black seeds are attached to the edges of the split shell fragments.

Plotosus lineatus

A marine fish of the order Siluriformes and family Scyllidae. Total length about 30 cm. It has eight barbels in its mouth. The front part of its body is vertically flattened and thick, while the rear part is laterally flattened and thin. The dorsal and anal fins are both continuous with the caudal fin. The upper side of its body is brown and the underside is pale white, with two vertical yellow lines on its sides. It has poisonous spines (→ poison glands) on its first dorsal and pectoral fins, and a sting from it is extremely painful. It lives in colonies on coastal reefs. It is found south of central Honshu, from the Red Sea to the western Pacific Ocean.

ミツバウツギ科の落葉亜高木で，アジア東部に分布する。関東地方より西の各地で山野の林中に自生する。枝は紫黒色でやや太く，葉は3～5対の小葉をもつ奇数羽状複葉で長さ 30cmほどになり，対生する。小葉は先のとがった長卵形で縁に内側に曲った鋸歯をもつ。初夏の頃，大きな円錐花序を頂生し，黄緑色5弁の小花を多数つける。果実は蒴果で裂開すると厚い殻の赤色の内面が現れ美しい。裂けた殻片の縁に光沢のある黒色の種子をつけている。

ナマズ目ゴンズイ科の海水魚。全長約 30cm。口部に 8本のひげをもつ。体の前部は縦扁して太いが，後部は側扁して細い。背鰭，尻鰭はそれぞれ尾鰭に連続している。体の上面は褐色，下面は淡白色で，体側に縦に 2本の黄線をもつ。第1背鰭および胸鰭に有毒棘（→毒腺）をもち，刺されると非常に痛い。海岸の岩礁地域に群棲する。本州中部以南，紅海から西部太平洋に分布する。
