An ancient Indian wind god. One of the nature deities in the Rig-Veda, the oldest Indian scripture. He is also called vāta. Both Bāyu and Bāta are generally used simply to mean wind. In the Rig-Veda, Bāyu rides in a shining car drawn by swift horses, and is sometimes chased by Indra (the god of wisdom). Bāyu is considered a purifier, frees people from evil, drives away enemies, and bestows fame, offspring, livestock, and wealth. He is also said to have the right to drink the sacred drink soma before anyone else. In one verse, Bāyu is said to have arisen from the life-spirit of the Purusha (the original man). This became the basis for later mystical speculations on the life-spirit. [Katsuhiko Uemura] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
