A marine fish of the family Acanthariidae in the order Acanthariformes. Its pelvic fins are located below and in front of the pectoral fins, and are characterized by their large, fan-like spread. It has been found in the subarctic regions of the Atlantic Ocean. The body is laterally compressed, with the dorsal and anal fins facing each other and positioned behind the center of the body. The caudal fin is large and fan-shaped. The fins have no spines and are entirely made of soft rays. It reaches a body length of 4 cm. The body is black-brown. It is covered with small ciliated projections that reach a maximum length of 1 to 1.5 mm, and has no scales. Many secretory glands are found in the ciliated projections, and it has been suggested that the smell, taste, or toxicity of secretions may allow the fish to escape from predators.
