A perennial grass of the grass family that grows on the forest floor of deep mountains or subalpine zones. The stems are generally solitary, rising from short rhizomes, reaching a height of 80-120 cm, and are weak. The leaves are broad and linear, 18-25 cm long and 8-12 mm wide, soft, thin, dark green, drooping at the tips, and hairless, at the nodes of the stem. In July and August, a somewhat large, sparse panicle is produced at the top of the stem. It is 20-30 cm long, 5-7 cm wide, drooping at the tips, and each node has a few whorls of thin, slightly drooping branches 2-5 cm long, each with numerous whitish-green spikelets.
