The capital of Burgenland in eastern Austria. It is located about 40 km southeast of Vienna, near the border with Hungary. It occupies a mountain slope covered with vineyards and is a center of the wine trade. Composer Haydn lived here from 1761 to 1790 and left behind many works. Haydn's house is now a museum. The 17th century Esterházy Castle also remains. Industries such as textiles and ski equipment are based here. Population 10,349 (1991). Eisenstadt |
