A port city on the Pacific coast in southern Peru. The starting point of the railway line from Arequipa to Lake Titicaca. The port was established in 1871, and industries such as textiles, flour milling, shoemaking, and furniture are carried out here. The beautiful coastline in the area has made it a tourist and health resort. In 1941, Matarani, about 14 km to the west, opened its port. Population: 23,000 (2005).
