Generally, a tailor is someone who deals with men's clothing, and a dressmaker is someone who deals with women's clothing. Today, the profession of clothing designer (called couturier in French) has emerged, and clothing stores that design, sew, and sell clothing are widespread. In Western Europe, from prehistoric times to modern times, family clothing was primarily made by women such as wives and daughters, but clothing with special shapes and requiring complex techniques was left to specialized craftsmen.
