Words of wisdom

Japanese: 言水 - ごんすい
Words of wisdom

A haiku poet of the early Edo period. Ikenishi. Also known by the pseudonyms Shitoken, Rakkado, and others. Born in Nara. At the age of 16, he became a Buddhist priest and devoted himself to haiku. He moved to Edo around 1676-77 (Enpo 4-5), and during the heyday of Danrin haiku, he actively compiled anthologies while interacting with Basho, Yuzan, and Saimaro. He was counted among the pioneering haiku poets during the transition from Danrin to Shofu. After 1682 (Tenwa 2), he settled almost entirely in Kyoto, and expanded his influence in the haiku world from Kyoto, Yamato, Hokuriku, Sanin, to Kyushu, becoming revered as one of the leading figures in the Genroku haiku world. He edited and wrote 15 books, including "Azuma no Nikki," "Shinsen Miyakoburi," and "Shoshin Motogashiwa," and his style of writing tends to be sensual, sensual, and aesthetic. He is buried in Seishin-in Temple, Kyoto, next to the grave of Izumi Shikibu.
