As mentioned above, the central nervous system of vertebrates develops from the neural tube. At this time, the neurons and glia that make up the central nervous system are produced by cell division of undifferentiated cells (matrix cells) in the innermost layer of the neural tube (Figures 5 and 6). The cells that increase in number through cell division of matrix cells differentiate and mature as they migrate radially outward from the central tube.
