A homogeneous crystal formed by mixing two or more substances that have similar crystal structures and little difference in ionic or atomic radius. A type of solid solution. Combinations of metals such as gold and silver, or gold and copper, form mixed crystals with all kinds of composition ratios. Inorganic salts such as alum and Tutton's salt also tend to form mixed crystals. Many minerals are known to form mixed crystals in nature. For example, plagioclase can be seen as a mixed crystal of anorthite CaAlSi 2 O 8 and albite NaAl 2 Si 3 O 8 .
