A general term for arthropods belonging to the order Acari (= Acarina, Acarida) of the class Arachnida. The English name is "tick" for those in the suborder Ixodida (family Ixodida and family Arachnida), and all other mites are called "mite." [form] They are small, measuring 0.2 to 2 cm in body length, with most measuring 0.5 to 1 mm. In the 17th century in France, the mites found on cheese and other foods were thought to be the smallest known mites, as seen in the examples of La Fontaine and Pascal.
