Daulatabad (English spelling)

Daulatabad (English spelling)
A fort in the northwest of the Deccan Plateau in India. Formerly called Deogiri (Devagiri), it was the capital of the Yadava dynasty (1187-1312). The Yadava dynasty was established by King Birama V after he separated from the Late Chalukya dynasty. After Birama V, the Yadava dynasty expanded its power mainly in the northern Deccan and became so powerful that it controlled the entire Deccan. However, in the 14th century, it was attacked by Alauddin of the Khilji dynasty of Delhi and finally collapsed in 1312. Later, Muhammad bin Tughluq (reigned 25-51), the second king of the Tughluq dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate, moved the capital from Delhi to this city in 27 and renamed it Daulatabad. Seven years later, Muhammad moved the capital back to Delhi, and Daulatabad was left in ruins. Even today, the great citadel built into the rock formations and the walls surrounding the vast city remain.
