1815‐95 He was the supreme authority of the Twelver Shiite sect in Qajar Iran. He was born in Shiraz, studied in Isfahan and Najaf, and became a mojtahid (mujtahid). During the tobacco boycott movement (1891-92), he issued an edict banning tobacco, which had a decisive influence on the movement. In his later years, he lived in Samarra and devoted himself to fostering learning, and many of his students were famous ulemas, including Moḥammad Nā'ini.
