Hunchun Incident

Japanese: 琿春事件 - こんしゅんじけん

This was an incident in 1920 in which the Japanese military massacred Korean residents of Hunchun and independence activists. It is also known as the Jiandao Incident. Hunchun County in Jiandao Province, Manchuria (now northeastern China), had been a residential area for Koreans since the end of the Joseon Dynasty, and after the March 1st Movement in 1919, nationalists and others flocked to the county, making it a base for the independence movement. In October 1920, a Chinese man from Manchuria, Chang Jiang Hao, led a band of bandits and attacked the county seat. Although police forces dispatched by the Government-General were stationed in the area, they offered little resistance and allowed the bandits to plunder as they pleased. However, after the Japanese consulate was attacked and a Japanese police officer was killed, the Ranam Division and a contingent from the Hambuk Police Department were dispatched to search for and kill Korean independence activists and their families. The local Korean People's Association organization was also destroyed.

1920年日本軍が琿春の朝鮮人居住者および独立運動の活動家を大量虐殺した事件。間島 (かんとう) 事件ともいう。朝鮮王朝末期から朝鮮人の居住地区になっていた満州 (現中国東北部) 間島省の琿春県には，19年の三・一運動以後，民族主義者などが流れ込み，独立運動の拠点となっていた。 20年 10月，満州の中国人長江好は馬賊団を率いて県城を襲った。現地には総督府派遣の警察隊などが駐在していたがほとんど抵抗せず，略奪をほしいままにさせた。しかし，日本領事館が襲われ，日本人警官が殺害されるに及び，羅南師団と咸北警察部派遣隊が出動し，朝鮮人の独立運動家と家族を捜して殺害した。また現地にあった韓民会の組織は破壊された。
