As many of his works are elegies for the death of princes and princesses, or for accompanying the emperor on his journeys, he is considered to have been a court poet who served the imperial court with poetry. There are 16 long poems and 61 short poems in the Man'yoshu that are clearly attributed to Hitomaro, and about 370 poems, both long and short, are said to be in the Kakinomoto no Hitomaro Collection.
