Unlike a frame stage, where the stage and the audience face each other, this type of stage is surrounded by seating on all four or three sides. It is also called a theatre-in-the-round, open stage, or thrust stage. Historically, this style was seen in Greek, Roman, and Elizabethan theaters, but in the first half of the 20th century, it was actively adopted by N. Ovropkov of the Soviet Union and American university theaters. After World War II, the M. Jones Theater in Dallas, the Circle in the Square in New York, and the Arena Stage in Washington DC were opened in the United States, and today this stage structure is used in many theaters as a way to reexamine the relationship between the stage and the audience and the quality of the actors' performances.
