A cropping style in which two or more crops are grown simultaneously in the same field, with no distinction between the crops as main or secondary. A typical example is mixed sowing, in which the seeds of several grass species from the grass and legume families are mixed and sown. Alternate cropping, in which two or more crops are grown alternately in regular rows, is also a type of mixed cropping, and is used, for example, alternating cropping of corn and soybeans. Mixed sowing is often classified as extensive cultivation, and its greatest advantage is that it spreads the risk of disasters. Alternate cropping is a more intensive cultivation method than monoculture, and takes advantage of differences in creeping and upright growth, shallow and deep root systems, and nutrient absorption, preventing disasters such as wind damage and improving the cultivation environment, resulting in higher yields than monoculture.
