Tateiwa [village] - Tateiwa

Japanese: 舘岩[村] - たていわ

A village in Minamiaizu County in the southwest of Fukushima Prefecture. Population 2,630 (1995). It is surrounded on all sides by mountains 1,000-2,000m above sea level that are part of the Taishaku Mountain Range, and borders Tochigi Prefecture to the south. More than 20 settlements are scattered among the mountains at an altitude of 600-800m, and most of the village area is covered by forests. Matsudohara, the central settlement, was uninhabited until the early Taisho period, but developed after the village office was established there in 1947. The main industries are agriculture and forestry, but productivity is low due to the mountainous area, and many people migrate to other areas to work in the winter. The Yaso Mine was located on the eastern edge of the village and produced copper, zinc, etc., but it closed in 1970.

福島県南西部，南会津郡の村。人口2630(1995)。四方を帝釈山地に連なる標高1000～2000mの山々に囲まれ，南は栃木県に接する。山間の標高600～800mの地に20余の集落が点在し，村域の大半を山林が占める。中心集落の松戸原は，大正初年まで無人の地であったが，1947年村役場が置かれて発展した。農林業を主とするが，山間地帯のため生産性が低く，冬季の出稼ぎも多い。村の東端に八総（やそう）鉱山があって銅，亜鉛などを産出したが，1970年に閉山した。
