Poisonous gas once spewed from a nearby vent, killing many animals, including bees and butterflies, that approached. According to legend, a nine-tailed golden fox disguised as Tamamo-no-Mae, the favorite concubine of Emperor Toba, was discovered by Abe no Yasunari, shot by Miura no Suke Yoshiaki, and turned to stone. During the reign of Emperor Gofukakusa, the monk Gen'o struck the stone with his staff, allowing the stone's spirit to attain nirvana. *Shiji Sho (1477), 15: "The eggplant is so strong that it is called Seikyu, isn't it?" When a monk named Gen'o was surprised to see a flying bird landing on a stone in Nasuno, Shimotsuke Province, a village woman appeared and warned him not to go near the stone because it was a killing stone, told him the origin of the stone, and said that she was the stone's spirit before disappearing. Eventually the stone broke and the spirit of the stone appeared from within in the form of a fox, who told him how it had become the killing stone, and, having received a memorial service for it, vowed not to do any more evil, before disappearing.

[一] 栃木県那須郡那須町、那須岳の寄生火山御段山の東腹にある溶岩。かつて付近の硫気孔から有毒ガスが噴出して、そこに近づくハチやチョウなどの動物が多く死んだ。伝説によれば、鳥羽天皇の寵姫玉藻前に化けた金毛九尾の狐が、安倍泰成に正体を見破られ、三浦介義明に射止められて石と化したものを、後深草天皇のときに玄翁(げんのう)和尚が杖で打ち、石の霊を成仏させたという。※史記抄（1477）一五「なすの殺生石があるほどにばし、青丘と云わるる歟ぞ」[二] 謡曲。五番目物。各流。作者不詳。佐阿彌作とも。玄翁という道人が下野国の那須野で飛ぶ鳥が石に落ちるのを見て驚いていると、里の女が現われて、その石は殺生石だから近づかないようにと注意し、石のいわれを語り、自分はその石魂であるといって姿を消す。やがて石が割れて中から石魂が狐の姿で現われ、殺生石となるまでのことを語り、供養を受けたので今後悪事はしないと誓って消える。
