...Taking advantage of the failure of the domestic affairs and military expeditions of the second king of the Delhi-based Tughluq dynasty, Muhammad ibn Tughluq, the Afghan-born Turkish governor 'Alā' al-Din Ḥasan, who had been dispatched to the Deccan region in 1347, declared independence under the name of Bahman Shāh and established his capital in Gulbarga. The dynasty, which lasted for about 180 years until the death of the 18th king, Kalim Allāh, in 1527, repeatedly fought with the Hindu dynasty of Vijayanagar in southern India over the diamond mines of Golconda and the areas along the Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers. Although it established Muslim rule in the Deccan region, it had no choice but to rely on the Brahmins and Marathas for administration and taxation. ...
