A noble family that ruled Mantua, Italy, from 1328 to 1627. There are two theories about the Gonzaga family's origins: that they were knights or commoners. By the end of the 13th century, they had become a powerful family that owned land in Mantua, Brescia, Ferrara, Reggio, Cremona, Verona, and Ivrea. In terms of status, the family monopolized the main city offices after King Luigi I expelled the Bonaccorsi family and became Capitano of Mantua in 1328. They expanded their rule to Cremona, Reggio, Legnano, etc., and were awarded the title of Margrave by the emperor in 1433 and the title of Duke in 1530, and the following year, they also received the title of Margrave of Monferrato through marriage.
