A deep-sea fish of the family Acanthodidae in the order Anserinidae (illustration). The body is long and slender and laterally compressed, becoming even thinner towards the rear. It has a huge mouth equipped with sharp teeth. The mouth slit reaches about 4/5 of the head length. There are rows of light-emitting organs along the ventral surface, underside of the sides and dorsal edge of the body. Light-emitting tissue larger than the lateral light organs is found on the ventral surface just in front of the eyes and at the rear end of the caudal peduncle. The dorsal fin is small and located slightly behind the center of the body. The anal fin begins in the center of the body. The pelvic fins are located slightly in front of the center of the body. They are known to change sex; after hatching, they grow to 6-7 cm and mature as males, and from the following year they change sex to females and mature, participating in reproductive activities with males one year younger.
