Anseriformes, Anatidae. There are only three specimens in the world (two of which are in the possession of the Yamashina Institute for Ornithology), and it is believed to be extinct since there have been no reliable records since 1964. Total length approximately 64 cm. In males, the crest (→ crest), chest, primary flight feathers, and tail feathers are greenish black, and the face from under the eyes to the neck is gray-brown. The belly, sides, and back are dark gray with dense black stripes. The coverts are white, and the wing speculum is green. In females, the eye ring is white with a black outer edge. The crest is greenish black, and the lower part of the crest up to the neck and the coverts are white. The rest of the body is dark brown. It breeds in northern East Asia, and is thought to have migrated south to Shanghai in winter. It is thought to have once inhabited eastern Siberia, the Korean Peninsula, and Japan, but the only records of this species in Japan are drawings from the 1700s and 1800s. According to a Russian academic journal from the Soviet era, three birds were collected in northeastern China in 1936, and three were observed in the Rimsky-Korsakov Islands southwest of Vladivostok in 1964. カモ目カモ科。世界に 3点の標本（2点は山階鳥類研究所所蔵）があるのみで，1964年以後は確実な記録がないため絶滅したと考えられている。全長およそ 64cm。雄は頭上の後頭に伸びた冠羽（→羽冠），胸，初列風切羽，尾羽が緑がかった黒色で，顔の眼下から頸は灰褐色。腹，脇，背は暗灰色の地に黒色の細かい縞模様が密にある。雨覆は白く，翼鏡は緑色。雌は眼輪が白くその外縁が黒い。冠羽は緑黒色で，その下側の頸までの部分と雨覆が白い。体の他部位は暗褐色。繁殖分布は東アジア北部で，冬季にはやや南部のシャンハイ（上海）あたりまで南下したと考えられる。かつては東部シベリア，朝鮮半島，日本にかけてかなり生息していたとみられるが，日本の記録は本種を描いた 1700年代と 1800年代の絵が残されているのみである。ロシアのソビエト連邦時代の学会誌によれば，1936年に中国東北地方で 3羽が採集され，1964年にウラジオストク南西のリムスキー＝コルサコフ諸島で 3羽の観察記録がある。（→ガンカモ類）
