Rose and Red Lotus Legend - Souka Korenden

Japanese: 薔花紅蓮伝 - そうかこうれんでん

A Hangeul novel from the Joseon Dynasty of Korea. Author and date unknown. The story is about Janghwa and Hongryeon, the daughters of Bae Jasou, who lived in Cheolsan, Pyeongan Province, who threw themselves into a lotus pond after being unable to bear the abuse of their stepmother Jang and her stepchild, and later appearing as evil spirits before a local official to get revenge. It is an embellished version of an actual incident that took place in Cheolsan during the reign of King Hyojong (mid-17th century). A distinctive feature of Joseon novels is that they are often fictionalized from tales (historical facts), and this is one such example. 朝鮮，李朝のハングル小説。作者，年代未詳。平安道鉄山に住む裴座首の娘薔花と紅蓮が継母張氏とその連れ子の虐待に耐えられず蓮池に身を投じ，のちに地方官の前に冤魂（えんこん）となって現れ怨みをはらした物語。孝宗時代(17世紀半ば)に鉄山で実際にあった事件を潤色したもので，李朝小説の多くは説話(歴史的事実)から小説化されるのが特色であるが，これもその一つである。継母型小説の代表的作品でもある。【大谷森繁】
