…In contrast to East Germany, which adopted a unified single-track school system after World War II, West Germany followed the Weimar era education system, which consisted of a common primary school, the Grundschule (4 years), followed by a three-track system of secondary education, the Hauptschule (5 years), the Realschule (6 years), and the Gymnasium (9 years). Since the 1960s, experimental Gesamtschule (comprehensive secondary school modeled on the British Comprehensive School) has been tried and partially implemented, but the traditional system described above still prevails. Also, since the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990, the former West German system has been adopted in the states of the former East Germany. …
