…When the St. John IV Emperor Frederick II died (1250), many did not believe in his death and thought he had retired to Mount Etna, partly because a prophetess had predicted that the emperor was alive but not alive. This legend led to the creation of false Fredericks in Germany (such as Tille Kolb in 1284 or 1285), but eventually a legend was formed about an emperor who slept in a mountain cave at Kyffhäuser in the Harz Mountains until the end of the world. At the end of the Middle Ages, the protagonist of this legend was replaced by Frederick I, and in the 19th century, it became a national tradition through the ballads of Friedrich Rückert, and it also became a symbol of German hope during the War of Liberation against Napoleon. …
