As a plant, it is a genus of brown or reddish brown swimming cryptophyte Cryptomonadaceae family in the order Cryptomonadales, and grows in both freshwater and marine environments. The cells are nearly inverted ovate, with a depression at the front end corresponding to one shoulder, and two flagella of slightly different lengths extending from the base. The longer flagella have a feathery structure, while the shorter ones have a single-winged structure. Each cell contains one nucleus and one membranous plastid, which contains chlorophyll a and b as well as phycobilin pigments found in red algae and cyanobacteria, and produces starch by photosynthesis.
