A bird of the family Emberizidae in the order Passeriformes. It is roughly the same size as a sparrow, with a total length of about 15 cm. Sexes are different. In the breeding season, the male has an entirely black head, a reddish-brown back with black vertical stripes, and a white underside. The female is a lighter brown bird overall than the male. In the non-breeding season, the male resembles the female. It breeds only in Japan, Primorsky Krai, and northern China, and in China it spends the winter in the Yangtze River basin. In Japan, its distribution is localized and not very large. It breeds in scattered low-lying marshes in the northern Tohoku region, and is common in the Tone River basin in central Japan. Other breeding grounds were known to be in Kirigamine and the foothills of Mount Fuji, but it has not been seen in recent years.

スズメ目ホオジロ科の鳥。スズメとほぼ同大で，全長約15cm。雌雄異色。繁殖期の雄は頭部全部が黒く，背面は赤褐色で黒い縦斑があり，腹面は白い。雌は全体に雄より淡い褐色のじみな鳥。非繁殖期の雄は雌に似る。日本，沿海州，中国北部だけで繁殖していて，中国のものは長江(揚子江)流域で冬を過ごす。日本でも分布は局所的で，数もあまり多くない。東北地方の北部の低湿地に点々と繁殖し，日本中部では利根川流域に多い。このほかに霧ヶ峰，富士山ろくに繁殖地が知られていたが，近年は姿が見られない。
