1832‐1913 Hungarian orientalist. His real name was Hermann Bamberger. As a young man, he studied Turkish and Persian in Istanbul. In 1863, disguised as an Islamic dervish, he traveled with pilgrims from East Turkistan, passing through Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand, and Karshi before returning to Mashhad in Iran. His travelogue vividly describes the state of affairs in West Turkistan before the Russian conquest of the Three Khanates. Since 1865, he has been a professor at the University of Budapest.
