Vámbéry Ármin

1832‐1913
Hungarian orientalist. His real name was Hermann Bamberger. As a young man, he studied Turkish and Persian in Istanbul. In 1863, disguised as an Islamic dervish, he traveled with pilgrims from East Turkistan, passing through Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand, and Karshi before returning to Mashhad in Iran. His travelogue vividly describes the state of affairs in West Turkistan before the Russian conquest of the Three Khanates. Since 1865, he has been a professor at the University of Budapest.

ハンガリーの東洋学者。本名はバンベルガーHermann Bamberger。青年時代イスタンブールでトルコ語，ペルシア語を学ぶ。1863年イスラムの托鉢修道者(デルウィーシュ)に変装し，東トルキスタンからの巡礼者といっしょにヒバ，ブハラ，サマルカンド，カルシーを経てイランのマシュハドに帰った。その旅行記はロシアによる3ハーン国征服前の西トルキスタンの実情を如実に伝えている。65年以降ブダペスト大学の教授となった。
