A medium-sized bamboo in the Poaceae family. The culms grow in clumps like rice stalks, and bamboo shoots appear in summer, hence the name Doyo bamboo, the young bamboo growing on the outside of the culm to protect the older bamboo inside, and Daruma bamboo, due to their strong regenerative power. Although native to tropical Asia, they also grow well in warm areas of Japan. Growing in clumps is a characteristic of this genus, as the underground stems are short and connected to the culms above ground. Some can reach a height of 8m. There are several or more branches at each node, and the twigs have 6 to 16 pinnate, long, thin leaves. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
