Launched as Radio Kyushu in June 1951, it began operating a television station in March 1958 and changed its name to RKB Mainichi Broadcasting in August. It is known for its extensive local reporting (such as the nightly 30-minute "RKB News Wide") and for producing documentaries that have produced many award-winning works, the latter of which has become a tradition for the station.
