Alexander Korda

Alexander Korda

British film director and producer. Born in Pustatar-Perstor, Hungary. His real name was Korda Sándor. After working in the film industries of Austria, Germany, America and France, he founded London Film in England in 1932. His film The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933), which he produced and directed, was an international success, and he began making Hollywood-style entertainment blockbusters. Although he later directed other films such as A Painted Life (1936) and A Beautiful Woman (1940), he mainly focused on production, completing films such as The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934), The World to Come (1936), and The Thief of Bagdad (1940), and launched the world into many of the most representative directors and actors in British cinema. After World War II, he revived the once-disbanded London Film Company in 1939 and produced such masterpieces as The Fallen Idol (1948), The Third Man (1949), The Tales of Hoffmann (1951), Supersonic Jet (1952), and Richard III (1955), ushering in a golden age for post-war British cinema.
