The temple of the goddess Aphaia stands on a mountain on the island of Eina, southwest of Athens, Greece. It was built between 510 and 490 BC, and is a Doric-style building with six columns on the front and 12 columns on the sides (→ Doric Order). The group sculptures on the east and west gables, depicting the Trojan War, show the two styles of the old and new eras (the east gable is newer), from the Archaic to the Classical periods. These sculptures are housed in the Glyptothek in Munich, Germany. (→ Greek Art) Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
