…The area flourished as a key transportation hub adjacent to Ryogoku Hirokoji, and boats called "Chiyoki" (boar-toothed boats) bound for Yoshiwara departed from the boathouses in Yanagibashi, and boats for cooling off on the Sumida River also traveled back and forth. There were many restaurants and teahouses on both sides of the Kanda River, and establishments such as Yorozuya Hachirobei (Manpachirou), Kameya Seiemon (Kamesei), and Umekawa Chubei also offered rented rooms and were places where Edo literati gathered. There were also many geisha, and the area continued to thrive even after the Meiji period. …
