Robert Mearns Yerkes

American psychologist and primatologist. He played a leading role in the development of comparative psychology. Since 1899, he has studied many animals, from lower animals to crabs, turtles, frogs, mice, rats, crows, pigeons, pigs, monkeys, and humans. In 1919, he founded the Primate Laboratory at Yale University, and in 1929, together with his wife, published his magnum opus, The Great Apes. The following year, he founded the Institute of Primate Biology in Orange Park, Florida, and as its director, he built the foundations for psychological and biological research on primates.

アメリカの心理学者，霊長類学者。比較心理学の発展に指導的役割を果たす。1899年以来，下等動物からカニ，カメ，カエル，マウス，ラット，カラス，ハト，ブタ，サル，ヒトに至る多くの動物について研究を行った。1919年，イェール大学に霊長類研究所を創設し，29年には夫人とともに大著《大型類人猿The Great Apes》を発表した。翌年，フロリダのオレンジ･パークに霊長類生物学研究所Institute of Primate Biologyを設立し，その所長として霊長類の心理学･生物学的研究の基礎を築いた。
