1876‐1956 American psychologist and primatologist. He played a leading role in the development of comparative psychology. Since 1899, he has studied many animals, from lower animals to crabs, turtles, frogs, mice, rats, crows, pigeons, pigs, monkeys, and humans. In 1919, he founded the Primate Laboratory at Yale University, and in 1929, together with his wife, published his magnum opus, The Great Apes. The following year, he founded the Institute of Primate Biology in Orange Park, Florida, and as its director, he built the foundations for psychological and biological research on primates.
