Indigenous people living in the northern half of the Kamchatka Peninsula and the mainland of the Russian Federation. Population: 8,900 (1989). They speak the Koryak language, and most of them currently make up the Koryak Autonomous Okrug. By the mid-17th century, when Russians first settled there, there were already two types of occupation: reindeer Koryaks and coast Koryaks (sedentary Koryaks). The former called themselves Chavchyv, and lived inland, specializing in reindeer herding. The latter called themselves Nymylyn. They settled on the coast, catching salmon and trout in the rivers in summer and making dried fish (yukkola), and in winter they hunted seals, whales, and other marine mammals in skin boats (baidara, baidarkas).
